Bright idea – unique new eco-friendly coffee fire lighters launched in SA

A new non-toxic FireFly Biofuel firelighter, made out of recycled coffee, biodegradable vegetable wax, recycled wood and unrefined sugar has been developed and launched onto the South African market and is now available at Brights Hardware.

The eco-friendly FireFly fire starters don’t contain any petroleum products or toxic chemicals and have a zero carbon foot print.

The FireFly Biofuel fire starter is made in a doughnut shape that enhances the burning time. Conventional products claim an average of 11 minutes of burning time, whereas FireFly Biofuel has an average burning time of more than double that (25 to 30 minutes).

“In addition to being eco-friendly, Firefly Biofuel fire starters don’t leave any residual chemicals when handled and so there are no smelly hands after use,” says Orlando Luis of Brights Hardware. “They are child and pet friendly and are natural bug repellents – which makes them great for camping as well.” 

FireFly fire starters are the brainchild of Kai Casson and Mariska van der Heide who came up with the idea out of a concern for the amount of toxins that are present in the average home on an everyday basis.

Originally testing started in a wendy house in the back garden. After months of adaptation and innovation, Kai and Mariska finally produced a product that met all the goals they had set – essential to which was the replacement of the petroleum ingredients for a natural equivalent.
