Holiday is where the home is!
With the COVID-19 Pandemic (mostly) behind us, 2022 has been a year to bounce back from the economic impact this global crisis has had. This also means that people don’t have excess cash to splurge.
Destination holidays have become excessively expensive… and let’s not even talk about the petrol price.
What do you do when you’re burnt -out, and ready for a holiday, but the budget says no?
We’ve compiled a few ways to turn your own space into a December holiday destination.
1. No notion of the ocean?
Beaches and waves are great, but a dip in the pool isn’t far behind. An above-ground pool is an easy, and budget-friendlier way to have your own pool. There are various options available, some polyurethane, some pitch-up, and some even corrugated sheets for that rustic farm dam look! You can even opt for a saltwater pool over the chlorine option, so it will even taste like salty sea water! See? We’re already one step closer to creating our very own Hartenbos.
2. Alfresco at night
Summer holidays and nicely lit, vibey restaurants go hand-in-hand. But also adds up to Rands-and-Rands! Create your very own holiday vibe in your backyard and have an ‘evening out’ whenever you want to, uncapped! Picture this: A gazebo with a table and camping chairs, an ambient fire, a Bluetooth speaker, fairy lights and a meal (that may or may not have been delivered by a motorcycle). Who wants to spend a fortune once when you can spend next to nothing for days!
3. A piece o’ pizza
If you want to upgrade the deluxe experience discussed above, you can make your own pizza! There are tonnes of recipes online, and you’re not limited to the options of one overpriced restaurant. You can literally create the pizza of your dreams, even if it includes pineapple! A bonus is that kids love pizza, and if you have a fussy mini-me, you have complete control over what toppings you put on. “I don’t have a pizza oven!” you may say – but, have we got a solution for you! Check out this firebrand, that you can sommer put on your braai, AND bake two pizzas at the same time! Bellissimo!
4. Kids’ camp
You may be okay with closing the laptop and hitting the sofa for 3 weeks, but your kids may have higher expectations of the festive season! You can easily turn your own backyard into a kid’s entertainment heaven! First, swing by any BRIGHTS and get a kiddies garden chair set, and a sprinkler. Then, buy a watermelon. Set up the table and chairs on the lawn, slice the watermelon in big slices, and let them go to town on it until they are sticky up to their ears! Then, simply turn on the sprinkler. They have fun, they’re clean, and your lawn is watered!
5. Buffelsbaai? Buffelsbraai!
While you’re now having the best holiday ever, at your own place, you can still go somewhere without touching your overdraft. Pack some chairs, a braai, stuff to actually braai, and head out to any local picnic and braai spot. This way you won’t have to go super far from home, you don’t have to pay any restaurant bills, and you’ll get a healthy dose of sunshine, social vibes and views !
These are just five holiday-at-home suggestions from our side, but if you’re the kind that loves to use holidays for building stuff, fixing stuff, painting stuff, wrenching on stuff, planting stuff, or renovating stuff, we have an entire magazine jam-packed with deals on everything from tile cutters to smart air fryers to cordless drills to toilet seats!
